• Notes

  Ignacy and Antoni conducted the combined administration of the whole of the Dąbrowica estates. Both died a martyr's death on the 22nd November 1918. I quote here the words describing the tragedy from the pen of a member of the family - "In the period after the Russian Revolution, the two older sons of Wiktor Broel-Plater were staying at Dąbrowica. With the threat from a diversion of ravaging bands, they were warned to leave Dąbrowica but despite this they remained there, aware that they could not depart leaving at that place numerous matters relating to the administrative affairs of the extensive estate. They brought together all the administrative personnel with their their households to their residence and took up arms with the resolve to see through that dangerous period. Dąbrowica was attacked by the marauding band and the mansion-house besieged. It was defended for several days. Seeing from their attacks that they were not succeeding to capture the mansion-house, the attackers decided to set it on fire and for this purpose obtained barrels of benzine and spirits. Negotiations began and Antoni and Ignacy agreed to capitulate in exchange for a promise to let the women and children go free. After capitulating, all the men were murdered in a barbarous manner". Because both died as bachelors, their younger brother Witold inherited after them the whole of the Dąbrowica estates. The residence at Dąbrowica was plundered and burnt together with the rich archives which had belonged to the family.
